  • Backfield: The sparsely-populated area in a team's territories, usually not adjacent to a border.
  • Blocking: Esp. in lightning games, surrounding a player or group of players who are behind enemy lines to prevent them from advancing farther in the enemy backfield. Blocking with insufficient players requires much guesswork, and moving late in the turn is often utilized.
  • Building up: When a team increases the amount of energy in a border territory, usually along a NAP'd border. Is usually considered a threat.
  • Choke Point: A geographical feature on the map, such as a narrow straight, through which a conquering team is forced to pass on a narrower front, decreasing the team's combat power and speed.
  • Dead Energy: Energy from players who have stopped playing, but their energy remains on a territory. Tactically useless, this energy artificially inflates a team's energy count, and serves only as fodder when a losing team starts withdrawing from its territories.
  • E: short for "energy". eg. Move 100E to defend Washington.
  • FFA: short for "free-for-all". Used to describe a frequent dynamic of the last several turns of a Lightning game as teams scramble for position.
  • Fort hippie: A player who will disregard orders to instead defend a fortification.
  • GXC: an abbreviation for GoCrossCampus
  • Multis: Short for multiples, meaning a player or group of players that does not exist, but is created with a false email address, usually controlled by one person. Used either to create energy, sabotage, or manipulate discussions in the chats.
  • NAP: short for "non-aggression pact". when two teams (who typically share a border) agree to not attack each other (doesn't necessarily mean an alliance or that they will help each other out) eg. We have a NAP with Purple.
  • Respawn: The act of being placed in a territory should a player's territory itself be conquered by another team. Players respawn in the territory closest to their previous territory, as determined by an unofficial 'center of gravity', indicated by the location of that territory's number on a typical map.
  • Rogue: A player who disobeys orders given by a team's commanders. The action of being a rogue is referred to as Going Rogue. Sometimes also used in lightning games to describe a small number of players who have broken through an enemy front to cause trouble in empty space.
  • Special Forces: trusted players that form an elite group in a team. SFs are usually under the leadership of a single commander who instructs them in a variety of operations, eg. late term manoeuvrings.
  • Swap: Planned attacks and evacuations by allied teams which allows them to gain the conquer bonus without the risk of attacking enemy factions. A triangle swap involves three adjacent territories between two teams, where one territory alternately attacks the other two, while the other team simply attacks directly back and forth.
  • Tapping: attacking with minimal energy to establish what players are in a given location. Useful if allied commanders want to contact people directly to get them to move.
