The Herrings were infamous players in the early stages of the game "Star Wars: A New Game" The number of actual people controlling the accounts is unknown; however, they operated under two principal names- "Red Herring" and "Blue Herring."

The original Red Herring was a member of the Stormtroopers team, and Blue was a member of the Jedi team. The Herrings had apparent access to all teams Battle Plans and posted them verbatim in the Game Chat. After two days, Red and Blue were spypolled and banned. This however did not deter the Herrings as they immediately resurfaced under the names "Bob 'Red Herring' Roberts" (Droids) and "Invisible 'Blue' Herring" (Jedi).

They continued for several days to post every battle plan in the Game Chat, despite being convicted of espionage. Blue Herring often suggested in chat posts that the Herrings supported the Stormtroopers team, but they were targeted equally. Some of the battle plans posted by the Herrings (usually of the Ewoks) were fabricated, using the original as a template.

An ambiguous player in the Herring mystery was Anne Herring. She joined the game several days into the Herring attacks and claimed not to be related to the Herrings that had been posting Battle Plans. She petitioned to her team (Sith) to not be spypolled solely on account of her name. For a few days, she was allowed to play, but eventually spypolled and convicted by her team. After the conviction, Red Herring made a public apology in game chat to Anne, seeming fully remorseful that she had been convicted because of his and Blue's choice of name. Red and Blue stated that they were not affiliated with Anne in any way.

After about two weeks, the Herrings stopped posting battle plans in the game chat. In a few isolated incidents in the following week, players without Herring in their name (actual affiliation unknown) posted their team's battle plan in game chat. In the later stages of their efforts, the Herrings came under heavy criticism from other players in game chat. When asked why they did what they did, Red claimed that he was bored and did not want to study for his finals. Blue said that he saw a few flaws in the account policy, and he wanted to find a way to point them out to the admins that would draw attention immediately.

During their fifteen minutes of fame, Red and Blue petitioned people to join in their campaign for anarchy. Even if they did not openly post battle plans to find a way to support the herrings. The Herrings may have inspired the nicknames of Peter "The Fish" Hazelwood (Sith), and Greg "Just for the Halibut" Maddux (Wookiees).
